Over 7 million central venous access devices (CVAD’s) are placed in the United States annually. This number is probably much higher now and will continue to increase in the coming years. Nursing specialty of Vascular Access has been growing in direct correlation with the increased need for patient’s long-tem intravenous therapies. CVAD’s have become an essential tool for the intravenous administration of many therapeutic modalities: such as fluids for hydration, blood and blood products, chemotherapy, antibiotic, parental nutrition, and more. Almost 93% of patients receiving home intravenous therapy have a long-term CVAD (Andris, 1991). Vascular Access has become a virtual “lifeline” for patients receiving prolonged intravenous treatments.
